TN "Mirrored Clock" 2018

Hello and welcome to my Geometry workshop's first AP. In this class, we discussed mathematic proofs, symmetry, and process of elimination. For this AP, we are going in depth on reflections. As an example our teacher Will took the game pong and traced out where the ball was going. You can find his AP here.



I decided to look for reflections and angles in clocks. Why? Well, angles are the sole focus of wall clocks and if you are looking at a clock in a mirror you will see a completely different time and end up late to your meeting!

In the picture below you will see the angle of the clock measured and reflected with a website called GeoGebra and I will be using slope in order to measure the reflections.

In conclusion, mathematically proving that there were reflections in the clock was challenging. As was figuring out the correct math equations to use. This AP was very intriguing and fun to do.

Asante Sana- Creation story

Hello, and welcome to my first action project for the humanities class, Stories!
 In this class, we read many different creation myths and talked about why different cultures may have similar or totally different myths. For this action project, we created our own stories about the creation of anything. I chose to create a mythical land called Asante Sana that is ruled by 3 gods. I hope you enjoy!

Ring my Tail: The taxonomy and life of the ring-tailed Lemur

Hello and welcome to the first STEAM action project of my sophomore year! In this unit, we learned about taxonomy, binomial nomenclature, and how Carl Linnaeus changed and developed modern taxonomy. We also learned about Set Theory which is basically categorizing with mathematical language. To prepare for this AP, we went to Lincoln Park Zoo to observe and record an animal of our choosing. I chose the ring-tailed lemur. In this AP, you will learn the taxonomy of the lemur and why it's in each category.

The Ring-tailed lemur, also known as Lemur cattus, can be found in the Comoro Islands of Madagascar. The type of habitat ring-tailed lemurs usually live in is a rainforest type environment with plenty of trees. They often live in female-dominated groups of usually around 17 members. The Lemurs lifespan is usually 16- 19 years in the wild. Interestingly, they are the only lemurs that spend most of their time on the ground instead of trees.

Scientists use something called the taxonomic system to categorize different animals. The taxonomy levels are that we talked about in class are.

This venn diagram compares my ring-tailed lemur with my partners' (JCA and LIH) black bear and red panda. It was very difficult to find similarities between the black bear and lemur because it seems like they were total opposites! However, we ended up finding common ground with night vision.

All in all, I really enjoyed this project it challenged me to draw which I almost never do! I really understood set theory and was able to do this AP pretty easily. I think this AP was a great way to start the new school year!

Bready or not

Hello! Welcome to Food Unit 2 AP. In this unit, we discussed leavening agents, why 350 is the perfect temperature for cookies and for this Action project we baked our own bread. Why did we do this? To see the differences between bread recipes that used two different leaving agents Yeast ( Control) and Baking soda (experimental).



In the end, I was able to really see the differences in loaves of bread. Which is something I never really considered when buying or eating bread. Who knew so much science was in food!

The Monoculture Problem

Hello welcome to unit 2 of Food for thought, Death. In this AP I will be addressing the UN with what I think to be the number one thing endangering our global food system, monocultures.

The global food system is the heart, soul and stomach of our society. Since it is the backbone of our world I think that it is very important that people are educated about it. According to Cornell “A food system includes all processes and infrastructure involved in feeding a population: growing, harvesting, processing, packaging, transporting, marketing, consumption, and disposal of food and food-related items.” Simply put, the global food system is the way that the world gets its food and in my opinion there is one major thing that is compromising it, monocultures. A monoculture is when a single crop is cultivated in one area leaving that crop more susceptible to diseases and can be easily destroyed by animals.

One historically devastating result of a monoculture is the irish potato famine. While the direct cause of the famine was a disease called late blight, the huge impact could have been lessened if the crops were diversified. Not enough people speak about monocultures simply because people aren't informed enough about the issue. According to greentumble.com reason that farmers might have a monoculture is that it is easier and more efficient. This simply doesn’t compare to the downfalls of monocultures. With a problem, there always comes a solution in this situation, I have three. The first and most obvious solution is biodiversity, biodiversity is when there is more than one crop being cultivated in a space.
The easiest way to make sure that plants thrive while in a diverse situation is with plant companions, plant companions help eachother grow and don’t compete for sunlight and water. Another solution is the rotation of crops, according to Home, Yard and Garden Pest this prevents some of the risks that come with monoculture. The SDGs are 17 Goals that the UN put in place to better our world. The obvious SDG that relates to monoculture solutions would be number 2 zero hunger. However, I think that another relevant goal would be sustainable cities and communities since community gardens and farm to table restaurants are becoming more and more popular as well as necessary. In conclusion, although education on monocultures seems tedious, it is very necessary to realise the very real consequences that could come from cultivating monocultures.

A Cheesy Story

This is the last AP for Fuel. In this unit, Future, we discussed chemical equations, pollution, reviewed graphing inequalities. We had an AP guest, Christa Markgraff from Nicor gas, we reviewed everything we learned this term and competed to win candies and bragging rights. This AP is to wake readers up and have them realize how much CO2 we are actually emitting and how we are throwing off the
carbon cycle.
 

As we are getting closer to the end of the year I think it is important to have projects where we are promoting a cause and introducing readers to a call to action. This AP was challenging yet, fun to complete especially because it's in a different format than I am used to.

Grow a pear!

Welcome to the first of the last APs of my freshman year! In this AP I thought about radical gardening and growing food for everyone. I learned about symbiosis, photosynthesis and phototropism. We discussed Charles Darwin and Fukuoka's principles of farming. While we didn't go on any FE's we did start mini can gardens. My group had Dill and currently, the plant has grown to be 3 inches tall!
